The LIFE financing programme was set up in 1992 as a result of two important Community Directives – the Birds Directive (79/409 / EEC) and the Habitats Directive (92/43 / EEC). The name “LIFE” is an acronym for the French phrase “L’Instrument Financier pourl’Environnement” (Financial Instrument for the Environment)) established by Regulation (EEC) No 1973.
The overall objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, information and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing programs with European added value.
