PARCO NAZIONALE DI PRESPA

MANAGEMENT UNIT OF PRESPA NATIONAL PARK AND PROTECTED AREAS OF WESTERN MACEDONIA

With the integration in Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) of the Management Body of Voras-Paiko-Vermio Protected Areas, the Management Body of Prespa National Park and the Management Body of the Protected Areas of Western Macedonia, the Management Unit of Prespa National Park and Protected Areas of Western Macedonia operates under N.E.C.C.A.’s Protected Areas Management Directorate (Sector A), based in Agios Germanos (Florina) with branch offices in Edessa and Kastoria.
The Prespa National Park is located in the northwest corner of Greece, in the region of Florina and despite its limited size, presents a rare wealth of natural elements and a wide variety of habitats and forms of life, making up a real laboratory of nature. In this very small area we find alpine meadows, extensive forests of beech and oak, juniper, a unique lakeside forest, settlements, pastures, crops and a rich and important wetland of international importance. The combination of Mediterranean and continental climates, the different rocks, the isolation at high altitudes, together with the past of about 5 million years have given the two lake areas, Mikri Prespa and Megali Prespa, a globally rich flora and fauna.
At this point, where the borders of Greece, Albania and North Macedonia meet, the need for nature protection on a cross-border level is a one-way street. Thus, the Prespa National Park is part of the first transboundary protected area in the Balkans, the Prespa Park, established on February 2, 2000, World Wetlands Day. The aim is the mutual cooperation of the countries for the joint protection of biodiversity, ecosystems and cultural heritage, because in nature there are no borders.
